This is a cute "extra" present to give someone, especially if you have made them a Birthday Scratch Card!
I made a small origami box, cut up some bits of crepe paper and wrote a rhyme around the edges of the box:
See a penny,
pick it up,
all the day
you'll have
good luck!
For easy instructions on how to make the box watch this video which I found really easy to follow.
Here is my breakdown of those instructions in pictures:
Start with two squares of paper. I suggest practising with larger pieces of paper before trying with smaller ones. I cut these squares from an A4 sheet of paper, making one large square and two mini squares from the same sheet.
First, fold the paper in half, then unfold and fold the other way to make a cross through the paper.
Then fold the corners of the square of paper into the middle of the cross you have made.
Up to this point in the process for both the bottom and the lid of the box is exactly the same. So once you have finished the bottom of the box, start again until you reach this point.
Now, fold one side of the square into the middle, making sure the triangle stays centred in the middle of the square. Do the same for the opposite edge of the square.
Then unfold the two folds you just made and pull out the triangles, as shown in the picture below.
Take the remaining edges of what was the square and fold them into the middle. The triangle shapes at either side should meet the new fold.
Now, stand the edges up vertically. These are the two sides of the box! Gently lift up the triangle which is pointing outwards and fold the creases to make the third side of the bow, as shown in the pictures below.
Then fold over the triangle to tuck it into the box and do exactly the same thing for the remaining side of the box.
Now, for the lid, go back and follow the same steps up to the point where you have 4 triangles folded into the middle of the square.
Now, as before fold down two edges of the square, but rather than folding them directly into the middle, leave a small gap so that you can just see the tips of the triangles in the middle. This will make the lid a little bit bigger than the bottom of the box.
Fold those edges and pull out the triangles, as you did with the bottom of the box and fold down the remaining edges, again leaving a small gap where you can see the tips of the triangles in the middle.
The triangles pointing outwards should meet the fold of the edges of the box, as shown in the picture below.
Now you can continue to follow the instructions used to make the bottom of the box, and your lid will be finished! It should be just slightly bigger than the bottom of the box so that it can slide over the top.
You can use patterned paper or decorate the box before folding it, just make sure the decorated side of the square is facing downwards when you are folding the triangles into the middle to make the box.
Et voilà!
